San Francisco allows dogs off leash only in designated Dog Play Areas (DPAs); elsewhere in Rec & Park properties dogs must be leashed. Some DPAs are fenced, many are open fields marked by signs.
- Leash your dog while entering and exiting the DPA, and carry a leash for each dog.
- Vaccinations and license must be current; dogs must be at least four months old; no females in heat.
- Keep dogs under control at all times and leash aggressive dogs immediately.
- Pick up waste, control excessive barking, prevent digging and fill any holes before leaving.
- Keep dogs out of plant beds and away from children's play areas and picnic areas.
- Commercial dog walkers need a permit for four or more dogs, may walk at most eight, and are welcome in DPAs between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
